Grapefruit essential oil is known for its sweet and citrusy smell, characteristic of the grapefruit rind of a freshly cut fruit.
It is said that grapefruit was created by an accident cross between the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and the pomelo (Citrus maxima). Once discovered, it was nicknamed the "forbidden fruit". It is believed that the fruit originated from Barbados in the 18th Century and eventually spread to mainland America by the early 19th Century. In 2018, around 9.4 million tonnes of grapefruit were produced across the world, with China growing around 53%. Vietnam and the United States are also top producers of grapefruit.
